I blog on Indian national security and my sense is India's establishment is stunned.  
It's little comfort that it's a stunning reversal of US relations with a lot of countries, not just India. Basic tenets of foreign policy are to assume that both sides are rational and that cooperation is better than an adversarial relationship. Even when there's a leader who does not understand diplomacy, one hoped that a professional team would guide the President, which does not seem to be happening.

1. India was supposed to be America's frontman to fight China, but Trump's team don't really give a damn about that and don't really have a strategy for China. Indian diplomats who go to Washington these days just get fobbed off whenever they try to talk about how they're standing up to China. *“Don’t tell me what you’re doing for us on China. Tell me what you’re doing for us as America.”*

2. The weird thing is some of the Trump administration's messaging on China still says they don't want China to dominate and want to counter it. And yet they're shitting on all the countries they need to help with that. So they don't know what they're doing.

3. Trump doesn't give a damn about Pakistan, they just buttered him up and greased up his family businesses so he's giving them a little something in return.

4. Modi should have probably given Trump some credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He tried to tell Trump he couldn't do that in public because it'd hurt his image at home. Trump didn't care and India got 50% tariffs. The Russian oil's just an excuse, Trump hit India because he thinks they can't hit back like China can, and... well, he's right.

5. The Indians got cocky, thought Trump 2.0 would be like Trump 1.0(and Trump 1.0 actually helped them with intel against China in the 2020 border clash) and now US-India relations are at the lowest since the 1990s.

6. Tariffs, H1B visas etc. are all gonna be a big economic hit for India. Officially it'll cut GDP growth by 1% but it could get much worse than that and it's bad for Modi's ratings at home.

7. Indian diaspora in America hasn't said anything about how badly Trump's been treating India, Democrats haven't either. It's mostly crickets. But India's own right-wing media(who used to like Trump) have been breathing fire.

8. Indians used to think Democrats didn't like India and a Republican President would be better for relations. Trump's cleared that up and now Indian diplomats are thinking about how great they had it under Biden. Now they don't even have anyone to talk to on the American side because Trump's people won't even pick up their calls.

I haven't read the article, but I think people are overstating this. Both countries know they are necessary partners at some level due to China and maintaining a stable Pakistan. Trade was never huge and there will continue to be networks between the private sectors and diaspora in the US. 

In my opinion, I think it mostly comes down to the personalities of the two guys leading these countries. They don't mesh and never will.

The stunning reversal displays the failure of India’s Non-Alignment policy in the aftermath of the Russia Ukraine war. India has relied on Russia as its primary weapons supplier for decades, however Russia does not have the capability to produce enough weapons to sustain a war of attrition with Ukraine and also supply India the quantity of weapons India needs to defend its vast borders. Moreover India does not have the capability to produce the quality and quantity of weapons it requires to defend itself against its neighbors like China. India’s main enemy Pakistan has the major advantage of being backed by 2 of the largest weapons manufacturers in the world US &amp; China. So in the case of a prolonged conflict with India, Pakistan will have the advantage of continuously being supplied with top of the line weapons from both US &amp; China while India’s fighting capabilities will keep on degrading over time. Pakistan has also found an ally in Saudi Arabia, so India’s energy supplies are also prone to major disruptions during a conflict with Pakistan. This is possibly the worst place India has been in decades, surrounded by powerful enemies on 3 sides and no allies internationally. India’s attempts at getting close with China is just an invitation for being backstabbed in the future akin to the 1961 war between the 2 nations.
Best thing India can do right now is to create a whole new branch of armed forces, Indian Marines and model it fully on the US Marines. Make huge weapons deals with the Trump administration to fully equip the new branch with American hardware. From assault rifles to possibly HIMARS and even F-16s. This will give US manufacturers access to the India’s defense sector and a monopoly to bid for lucrative contracts with the newly formed branch of Indian military, India gets a whole new branch of military equipped with US hardware while retaining its traditional suppliers like Russia, Israel &amp; France. It can also give India a certain degree of diplomatic support from the US and the US military industrial complex gets a whole new market. Yes in a way India will be paying its way out of the sticky situation it is in right now but India has no other options and Trump administrations is the only administration that can get onboard with such plan and take decisive  actions that benefit the US weapons manufacturers quickly enough to give India the much needed security it needs from China &amp; Pakistan. The framework for such a deal can be negotiated as a part of the tariff negotiations ongoing between US &amp; India which also allows both sides an avenue to come to a mutually beneficial agreement without loosing face or further escalating the situation.

You only have to see the map of Asia to realize why US cannot have a Russia-India-China axis. Even an India neutral on East Asia would be horrible for US in the East Asia, so the courting of India originally despite its many shortcomings. A neutral India would free up China from worries about Southern flank and fully move against Taiwan. The day Taiwan falls is the day that the countdown starts for US in Japan and S Korea as it would be the marker of loss of US primacy in East Asia. Expect Japan and S Korea to fold and fall in China orbit in less than a decade after that. This neutrality is what China wants from India in return for no pressure on border and releasing of critical materials. Also notice how Taiwan and Japan is still courting India. And no Pakistan is not a substitute. The geography does not permit a land ingress through Shaksham valley and if they are foolish enough to allow their airbases to be used during US-China war then expect a 10X Sindoor from China. They can let their airspace to be used and China can still create mayhem.

However, from Indian side getting pulled in America's war is a fools errand as there is no upside and anyway none came to its help during Sindoor. And getting involved in a land war with China is very very stupid, irrespective of the carrot dangled by US.

So in a lot of way, I think the current path for India is optimum. Trump has done us a huge favor in removing our blinkers. Mend fences with China with strict red-lines i.e. tranquil border and limited arming of Pakistan plus of course lots of trade. Also, when the Americans and Japanese come calling, humor them for industry, capital and tech and of course to keep China in check. US and Japan are gonna come as they have little alternative, other than to cede primacy in East Asia to China and having close relation with India will always keep China off-balance as ultimately their open societies and economies are naturally compatible with India. One day India and China may (not necessarily) fight for primacy in Asia, but that day is after China-Taiwan denouement so at least 10 years off.

Meanwhile, keep head down and steady and keep developing.

A big setback to the relationship, yes. But nothing is over. The moment Trumps leaves, efforts to normalise will begin no matter who wins the next election. Will it take time to build trust? No doubt about it.

Relationship that was slowly being built after George Bush's olive branch lifting nuclear sanctions and offering us the nuclear deal around 25 years back has been broken. Not by tarrifs as much, but by the unhinged rants by Trump and others in his admin.

IMO, the only thing India has achieved is normalisation of the relationship with China, which is HUGE!

Without having to worry about Chinese aggression, a border solution might be on the way. India will have to worry less about spending on defence, which is also in China's interest as they won't have to continue seeing India as a security threat.

I believe this is in line with US strategy as well. There is no way US and China would go to a war. So, why would India?

India should also focus on mending trade relationship with US now that Chinese ties are back to normal. India will HAVE to give concessions to US. They are not stupid to have everything thought through.

With a spree of FTAs, and a better relationship with both US and China would be goal for leadership.

1)Obama from democratic party got a Nobel peace prize and hence Trump craves one to counterbalance Obama's popularity. US called Modi when he went to Canada for the summit hoping that Trump might get a photo shoot of Modi and Azim munnir in the whole house next to Dolund Zrump the same way he did with Armenia and Azerbaijan inorder to claim he ended decades long hostility and hence a viable candidate for Nobel peace prize. And we all know how Modi shrugged off 4 calls from US and asked MEA to inform US that he got plans to visit Croatia after Canada and hence cannot come to US anytime soon. Unlike Pakistan which was quick enough to get on its knees to gawk gawk Trump and US for validation and promote Trump for Nobel peace prize, India stood it's ground and said Trump had no part in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Op sindoor. This discredited Trump which infuriated him . 

2) After messing with china, they stopped buying American farm products especially corn, soya and other diary stuff and meat stuff which were sourced from Brazil and other countries now which leaves a huge surplus of American farm products that they're trying to find a buyer for. They can sell it to Europe but they can't since Europe requires carbon certificate for imports, so naturally the best option is India which is why US is trying to push agriculture and diary import duty reducts to dump their surplus shit that China refused to buy. 

3) Crude prices. We all know US despite having huge reserves have been hoarding their crude for decades hoping that once other countries run dry, they can sell their crude at whatever price they fix. But the rapid development of EVs and fuel cells and countries pledges towards carbon neutral goals has given US very little time to pump enough crude to make money and ofc why pump how and sell them for low prices when they can arm twist the world to stop buying from Russia, create a huge demand , pump as much crude as possible and sell them in the short amount. They tried this, but sadly India and China buying Russian crude is keeping global demand and Supply stable, if it wasn't for us, the crude prices might've touched all time high. This also triggered the oil mafia in US who are crying to Trump. 

Not everything is as simple as it seems when it comes to foreign policies and geo Politics. There might be more factor at play too, but these are some of the ones that I'm certain of .

It’s a trade based relationship with strong geopolitical reasons behind it, yesterday’s friends can be tomorrow’s enemies, you sell more newspaper by stoking personal and popular perceptions into it. I doubt anything emotional was involved, India has never been a strong player, decades of freedom and opening up trade hasn’t changed their leverage in global terms by a lot, the difference is so stark compared to China. Essentially being punished for being a small time speculator for buying cheap oil and reselling. With Left leaning politics and lack of strategic vision has essentially drove the final nail into country’s future, where individual persons quality of life and happiness index is prioritized to lowest degree, it will continue to be a country the brightest and the best want to run away from and never towards. India was never "close" to anyone. We have been non-aligned since independence.

The US is not "dumba*s" and India is not "stubborn". Everyone does what they "perceive" would be better for them. Perceptions can turn out to be devastating or favouring, that's for the future. Nobody "sees" the future. Everyone speculates.

If down the line the US observes the decision is losing for them, they would have to enter a deal that's tilted towards India (Russia oil deal is exactly India exploiting Russia's plight). On the contrary, if down the line, India observes they are losing, they would sign a deal that's tilted towards the US. It's just business 101. The US is speculating they would get a better deal down the line or maybe they are already getting something else, that's better, by losing on "India deal".

We just need to observe.

Ashley Tellis is an India-born American foreign policy analyst who's spent decades advocating for closer geostrategic ties between the two countries. He had served as an advisor for the Obama administration during the historic India-US nuclear deal negotiations more than a decade ago.

Ever since this tariff war with India began I've been looking around for expert opinions on what happened and Tellis appears to be the only one who has been right on the money from the beginning about Trump's attitude regarding India and more broadly, foreign policy.

In February, Tellis had given another interview where he correctly surmised that Trump did not care about geopolitics in the conventional sense, which meant that the old assumption about being a long-term counterweight to China that had given India value in the eyes of successive American Presidents no longer applied. He also explained that Trump's zero-sum view of trade could lead to an extremely bleak outcome for countries like India, and praised Modi for being one of the first world leaders to meet Trump, strike up a 'bromance' and begin negotiations. 

However he also warned that Modi's hugs and praise and willingness to negotiate only bought India a few months' respite, and that he would have to keep up the pandering *and* make significant economic concessions in order to spare India from Trump's wrath. Six months later, everything he warned about has come to pass.

How does India get out of this hole now? According to Tellis,

India was never aligned in the first place. Their playbook is being unaligned. In this moment it suits them to appear to get closer with China. In another moment they will go the other way. That is how they choose to leverage their political coil. They have only ever sided with their own interests on a case by base basis.

Quite frankly to attribute this to one man, even if it is THAT man. Is giving him too much credit. This is hardly more significant than previous administrations choosing to align with Pakistan.

India? It's pretty much the whole world's confidence in US is shattered. Even NATO allies are losing confidence in the US, let alone non allies and trading partners.

And the US is wondering why more countries are joining the BRICS and more are wanting to join.

Because Indian companies are defying sanctions by buying cheap oil from Russia to help them fund their war against Ukraine, and that is objected to?  To allow Russia to prolong that war and murder tens of thousands more Ukrainians?  Because that's what is happening.

I’m pretty sure India is also at fault here for continuing to buy Russian oil/weapons and showing up to a literal dictatorship summit with Xi, Putin, Kim Jong Un, and the world's autocrats.
